Writing

It’s the lusty month of May? Already??

It’s May.  How did it get to be May? Why did time surge by like this?  What have I been doing the last month?

Well, to be honest, revisions.  I’m finally digging into a novel, Phantom Killer, set in the same world as the short story I wrote for The Death of All Things. Getting to this point involved a lot of structural reviews of the book, lots of notations, and a realization I needed to beef up the 80K little thing with a lot more personal detail.

The downside of coming from a screenwriting background is you think about the basics: Structure, Dialog, Pacing, etc. All the rest is set dressing designed to be added in later.  Or, to put it another way (and tied into the Horror Project story) – for some, writing and rewriting is like taking a big chunk of wood and getting it into a rough shape. From there, you carve away bits and pieces, maybe do some filling with resin, and get yourself a nice bowl. Or vase. But you get the idea.

For me, it’s more like the old documentaries you see on practical model VFX.  You start with sketches and ideas. Then build out a basic framework, leaving room for the lights and for the exterior work. After that, you start layering on parts. You add the texture, detail, color, lighting effects. All of this gets built around an armature you can film from a dozen different directions.  So instead of carving away, I end up trying to get something like this made:

And that’s where I am right now with the novel. I’ve got basic structure and dialog. I need to start layering the details. All the lights and paint and colors that make it come to life.

Will try and post a bit more about this process but expect to hear about it on the next Vlog.

  1. Lol I like how your previous experience gives you more to think about. It’s like, the more you know, the less you know. And time has been flying by indeed. Here’s to meeting our writing goals!
