General Thoughts

“It’s a bitter little world(con)” – Appearances at Chicon 8

I can officially announce I am a panel participant at Chicon 8: The World SF Conference. Here is my current schedule:

You’re seeing a lot of Noir in the panel description. To anyone who knows me, or has seen my twitter feed late Saturday nights, you can guess why. Wonder if, at this point, I should be concerned with becoming the “Noir guy.” But, if it can get people thinking about noir as more than blondes walking into PI’s offices filled with smoke, I’m there for it.

But let’s talk about the others. First – my reading. Yes, I have a reading. I’ll be promoting the new anthology, but the fact I’m here is still boggling me.

Tradecraft in Comics – longtime friends of the channel know I am a tradecraft junkie. My first two (trunk) novels featured characters who were, essentially, in the espionage business. They lived by The Moscow Rules. A lot of this translated into my NOIR short story as well. From this panel, I’m hoping to get some more recommendations. It’s so easy to go to the superspy route, complete with catchy theme. It’s harder to go The Sandbaggers route.

The Lives of the Dead ties right into my DEATH OF ALL THINGS short story, and my current work in progress. I’m looking forward to talking about the fascination of the dead peering into the lives of the living.

And last but not least From Bootlegs to Netflix: Exploring Western Access to Anime – AKA “I remember when…” I was likely pulled here because I was part of the Penn State Science Fiction Society crew that arranged for some of the first anime marathons on campus, and were the crew that helped found this thing called Otakon.  It’ll be interesting to hear from the memories of others.

Hope to see folks there!
