Beauty in the Ruins

Before I jump in, A.J. Harris’ new short story is out in the world. You can order copies of the Silver Soldiers anthology  at Delilah Dawson’s website here.

It’s got 86 reviews so far! Guess there’s an interest in these types of tales.

Now, on to Hell House – or the ruins of the St. Mary’s Monastery outside of Ellicot City, MD. Nearly a decade ago, my wife took me there for my birthday. It’d become known as Hell House for the graffiti and weird remains. The house itself burned down but parts of the outdoor chapel remained:

But, shortly after COVID-19 came into our world, an artist decided the ruins needed a bit more love. And mystery. And dragons.

The amount of time and effort to create this artwork on all of the remains is astounding. They painted everything black before stenciling on the runes, dragons, and other images. My photos barely capture a third of what is now there.

Mystery artist: thank you. Too often in this world, we like tearing down spaces like this – we don’t appreciate the stories and adventures in strange places. My version of this place (Called Satan House back in the day) was covered in graffiti made by high school art students. It was strange and Lynchian. It only survives on a VHS tape in my storage vault. That summer, it was torn down for a McMansion.

It’s only when someone calls attention to the art and brilliance of places like this that they are preserved.  I hope, 10 years from now, I’ll be able to come back once again and see a new generation’s art.
