October Memories

Has it been over a month? I need to write more. Well, here, at least

I’ve got a picture of Howliday Inn up because it is one of my early October memories. Autumn is my favorite season. It wasn’t always the case, though. In youth, it was all about summers. They were a relief from school and a chance for me to settle into the sun with a heap of paperback books.

As a young kid, they were books like The Mummy, The Will, and the Crypt or Han Solo’s Revenge or the Bunnicula books. Specifically, Howliday Inn – a gothic mystery in a pet boarding house. Intrigue and weirdness in a suburban setting. Chester remained my favorite character. Best cat. Still remember him trying to meditate with a were-dachsund puppy.

And in my mind, it would be fall. Cool breezes. Leaves turning, begging to be raked into piles you could jump into. My mother would always be afraid of something sharp or dangerous lurking in the piles. I was hoping for a body… One of the reasons I wrote my flash fiction story ‘Weather Underground’ was to catch the sensation of keeping autumn in your heart no matter where you were.

Now, I can enjoy it all. Or could, until we started getting 80 degree autumns – thanks climate change. But I had my leaves. My darkness on the TV and in print. And on-line. Pre-Code horror is a trip, folks.

No matter the season, keep Autumn in your heart.
