General Thoughts

Helene – and the beginning of Autumn

A cloud hung over this weekend. Despite the joy in visiting my mother-in-law for her 80th birthday and family reunion with her sisters and brother and other family – Helene left darkness in all the corners.

I’m going to leave a link to my friend Angela’s page (Link Here) to various orgs which are helping with the rescue. Please, if you are giving to assist those in need, beware of scammers. Disasters like this will always bring out the best and worst, so be careful.

Now, on to Autumn:

There is a reason my wife keeps her family home as an exemplar of warmth and safety. Even when it gets full on Midwest family talking at high volume during card games, there is comfort here. Warmth and welcome. Which is how I feel about fall. When I’m here, I’m always able to write. I never feel weird or pressured. I feel safe – sheltered from the world for just a little bit.

It’s hard to generate that feeling in your own house sometimes. All you see are the projects left undone, or the work that’s coming on Monday (for those still working from home). That’s why we generate it for others when we can.

Life is rough out there. Too many folks find comfort in the pain of others, or the superiority they feel when crushing those in need of help. Kindness, warmth, and shelter is an act of revolt in a world of performative cruelty. Be a cozy autumn vibe for those who need it.
