For any who were confused about what happened on Orthodox Christmas Day – January 1st 2021 – a crowd of right-wing nationalist/anti-Semite/fascist supporters of Donald Trump attempted an insurrection. They stormed the Capitol building while a joint session of Congress was affirming the clear and legitimate election of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States. They did so at the exhortation of Donald Trump and his people at a rally.
In contrast to the Black Lives Matter protestors during the year, did not meet a heavily militarized and coordianted response response. Instead, they met light resistance from Capitol Police and an apparent reluctance by administration do anything but let them run riot, destroy property, threaten the lives of Congressional staffers, steal, hang neo-Nazi and Confederate flags in Chambers, and otherwise act as if this was the end of a rowdy football game.
Until a few law enforcement agencies started responding. Then, and I quote: “This is not America,” a woman said to a small group, her voice shaking. “They’re shooting at us. They’re supposed to shoot BLM, but they’re shooting the patriots.””
You are not patriots. You are insurrectionists at worst (I won’t dignify you with the idea you were staging a coup) and rioters at best. The behavior on display is used to justify horrific and overwhelming attacks on minorities and dissenters, yet you went on with it thinking your whiteness and privilege (and I mean privilege – hotels in DC ain’t cheap, and some folks flew in on chartered jets!) protected you.
I’m horrified to say you were, as of this writing, right. Until I see QAnon Shaman or the people with the 6MWE shirts being hauled out of their homes, thrown to the ground, maced, beaten and dragged into armored vehicles like people who were peacefully protesting the death of George Floyd before Donald Trump decided on a photo-op, they’ll have gotten away with it.
And that treatment will be a kindness. You will get treated Vidkun Quisling, who was given a trial before the end. And you won’t end up like the fascist collaborators in other parts of occupied Europe – into the woods, never to return.
The people you hate and despise are truer, better American patriots than you ever will be.
